More than 300 million inkjet cartridges and 70 million laser cartridges are sold in U.S. annually. Every year over 300 million cartridges with a combined weight of 150 million pounds are buried in our nation’s landfills. Once in a landfill, a laser/toner cartridge can take up to 450 years to decompose.  If you walk into landfill today you may see toner cartridge laying there since the 90’s.What’s more, it takes approximately one gallon of oil to produce every new toner cartridge (Credit:http://www.evolverecycling.com/recycling-facts.aspx).

So, what is Morgan Duke Conservation Society doing to prevent ink cartridges from going into landfills? First, we have partnered with the Funding Factory , which helps nonprofit schools recycle printer cartridges and raise money.We also recently joined the online Office Depot Greener Office program, an initiative that helps businesses become more eco-conscious. Many groups like local banks, school computer labs, insurance companies, a theme park, and a minor league baseball team have kindly donated and recycled their printer cartridges to Morgan Duke Conservation Society. Since beginning our efforts, we have recycled more than 500 pounds of toner cartridges through the ongoing support of several businesses and individuals in the community. Every other week and month, businesses give Morgan Duke Conservation Society their used printer cartridges to recycle – this helps us raise much money to help with our conservation and recreation projects. 

If you are business owner, work at a business or school computer lab, or just wish to donate your cartridges, you can sign up to support our recycling initiative through both the Funding Factory and Office Depot Greener Office. Both of these programs supply businesses and individuals with free, pre-paid UPS shipping labels. On Funding Factory, once you sign up for a business supporter account, you will be able to login to your account and access many features.  The website enables you to identify how many cartridges you recycled – this is an extremely helpful tool that enables you to measure the impact your you or your business have had on our recycling initiative. Additionally, you may order boxes with pre-paid labels, have individual labels sent to you, or print them out yourself. If you need technical support or have questions about Funding Factory, you can contact them through email or live support chat. Best of all, when you send in a qualifying shipment, Funding Factory will give us a $10.00 bonus.

If you sign up for an Office Depot Greener Office account, please be sure to return the cartridges through mybusinessrecycles.com, rather than in the store.  Unfortunately, Morgan Duke Conservation Society does not receive credit through the in-store program.
